Installation tips (Installation Tip in pdf)
We'd like your Kayu™ deck installation to go as smoothly as possible, with the finished product's appearance and performance maximized for your enjoyment. To this end, we recommend the following:
Prior to installation
Keep all your deck material clean and dry prior to treating and installation
Treat your deck materials with a penetrating sealer on all 6 sides prior to installation.
Consult your dealer as to the best weather treatment for your area. finishes with fungicides, mildewcides and UV inhibitors will help keep your deck looking it's best longer.
Installation
We STRONGLY recommend using Kreg's Deck Jig. The best way to install KAYU Exotic Decking Period.
Kayu™ decking is kiln dried; there is minimal shrinkage. Like all woods though, it will absorb moisture and may expand.. Please make sure to leave at least 1/4" between 5-1/2" boards and at least 3/16" between 3-1/2" boards side to side, to avoid buckling as the wood expands. Shrinkage/expansion length wise is nil, so trim the ends neatly and butt together tightly. Please note it is recommended the spacing to be tighter in dryer desert climate.
The interlocking grain of Kayu™ meranti decking products machines and takes screws and nails very well. However, we are more partial to galvanized dipped nails or stainless steel screws. Pilot holes 3/4" from the ends of the boards minimizes splitting as does nailing in at least 3/4" from the sides of the boards. Fasteners should penetrate 1-1/2" or more into the deck joists.
Maintenance
